Mahila Umang Producers Company

Our aim is to initiate people’s action for the restoration of languishing river basins through holistic mountain development programs.   Through our work we assist communities achieve the Millennium Development Goals as well as mitigate and adapt to the pressures of Climate Change.

At the heart of our approach is the belief that villagers have the desire, the right and the capability to actively participate in the decisions that affect their lives.  By bringing the regions local groups together, we attempt to create a movement, pressing competently for ecological restoration across the central and western Himalayas. Self-help groups of women, viewed as the bedrock of change and development, are being enabled to provide fresh vegetal cover and take appropriate measures to renew habitat-hydrology in degraded drainage basins. Multi stakeholder platforms are being organized to facilitate free flow of ideas regarding sustainable land use, role of appropriate technologies and establishment of community owned enterprises.

We are dedicated to training local people; from the technical knowledge for installation of bio-gas units  to the managerial skills required to market value-added local products. This has led to the formation of two local organisations: Kumaon Artisans Guild and Mahila Umang Samiti.

We have researched, identified and implemented a range of innovative technologies across the inter-related issues of water, sanitation and renewable energy.  We call them appropriate technologies because these applications are not just low-cost, they’re easy to maintain and equipped to face the challenges of mountain life.

We believe that water shortage, fuel- poverty, dwindling forest cover and loss of livelihoods are all connected.  Over the years, we have evolved an intervention strategy which channels resources – managerial, technical and financial – directly to the people and community associations working at the village/watershed level, which improves the quality of life, here and now, as well as for future generations.

We endeavour to document and share all of our work for the purpose of enhancing the quality of future mountain development programme. Making information available to government, policy makers, Nos and other stakeholders.
